“Hans Rogler is said to have been the first German farmer to plant potatoes in 1647. This is said to have taken place in the village of Pilgramsreuth near the town of Rehau, in what is now the district of Hof in Upper Franconia, Bavaria. A monument in Pilgramsreuth commemorates him today. Rogler himself is said to have received the tubers in Roßbach (now in the Czech Republic) from relatives, who in turn are said to have received them from a Dutch soldier.”
